Gov. Moore Orders Maryland Flag to Half Staff in Honor of Firefighter Higgins

Governor Wes Moore has directed that the Maryland flag be lowered to half-staff immediately. This honors Master Firefighter Christopher Higgins of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service. Higgins tragically lost his life in the line of duty on Saturday, Jan. 11.

The United States flag will fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, Jan. 24 for Master Firefighter Higgins’ funeral service.

Both the U.S. and Maryland flags will remain at half-staff to honor former President Jimmy Carter. Flags will return to full-staff at sunset on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

This simultaneous tribute reflects the state’s respect for two individuals who dedicated their lives to serving others—one through firefighting and the other through leadership and humanitarian efforts.

Moore encourages residents to reflect on Master Firefighter Higgins’ sacrifices and President Carter’s contributions during this mourning period.
